An Army-led joint security operation has rescued 21 people abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi State, following a coordinated search of forests around the Egume and Ochaja axis.
The victims, comprising eight males and thirteen females, were rescued on Monday, August 31, after security agencies received credible information about their location.
The operation was led by troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, under the 2 Division, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, local hunters and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
According to a statement by the Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi , the rescue followed the reported mass abduction of road users along the Alloma, Ejule and Itobe road axis.
Acting on intelligence, the joint team mobilised from the 21 Battalion Headquarters and launched a coordinated search through the surrounding forest areas.
The operation eventually led security personnel to the location of the victims, who were all successfully rescued.
unfortunately, one of the rescued male victims sustained a gunshot injury to his leg and was immediately evacuated to the 21 Battalion Medical Reception Station for treatment.
The other victims are currently receiving necessary attention at the 21 Battalion Headquarters, while arrangements are being made for their safe reunification with their families and the relevant authorities.
The Commander of 12 Brigade commended the troops and other security personnel involved in the operation, particularly their courage, determination and coordination.
He assured residents and road users within the Brigade’s area of responsibility that the Army, working with other security agencies, would continue to intensify search and rescue operations to protect lives and counter kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The Nigerian Army also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
The latest operation highlights the importance of intelligence-sharing in tackling kidnapping, particularly in areas where criminals exploit surrounding forests and other difficult terrain to conceal victims.
