The Defence Headquarters has reassured Nigerians of sustained international backing in the fight against terrorism, while also dismissing fears of insecurity in the nation’s capital.
Speaking in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, revealed that Nigeria’s partnership with the United States is yielding tangible results, particularly in intelligence sharing.
He emphasized that the collaboration does not involve foreign troops on Nigerian soil, but rather strategic support aimed at strengthening ongoing military operations across the country.
Onoja expressed confidence that the current arrangement is delivering progress, noting that there are no plans to scale back the cooperation.
On concerns about security within the Federal Capital Territory, he maintained that Abuja remains highly secure, with multiple security agencies working round the clock to keep residents safe.
He warned that criminal elements would find no safe haven in the capital, assuring residents to go about their daily activities without fear.
Addressing the recent killing of a member of the National Youth Service Corps during a security operation, Major General Onoja assured the the military has promised a full and transparent investigation.
Onoja explained that conflicting accounts have emerged over the incident, and efforts are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the civilian’s death, with a promise that findings will be made public and accountability ensured where necessary.
On intelligence sharing, he acknowledged concerns from some communities over delayed responses to security threats, but stressed that timely action depends on information reaching the correct security channels.
However, he urged residents to work closely with security agencies through verified contacts for quicker response to emergencies.
