The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Bauchi State Command, says 9,932 students and staff of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, have so far undergone its Drug Integrity Test.
The exercise is part of the Agency’s preventive drug-control efforts aimed at promoting drug-free learning environments and curbing illicit drug use and substance abuse among young people.
The Bauchi State Commander of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Hassan Yaqub, disclosed this on Monday, August 10, 2026, while addressing students undergoing the exercise at the university.
According to the command, the figure comprises 6,532 males and 3,400 females.
Yaqub said the exercise was being conducted in line with the directive and vision of the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Retd.), as part of the Agency’s sustained efforts to prevent drug abuse, particularly among students and young Nigerians.
Addressing the students, the commander urged them to maintain a drug-free lifestyle, warning that substance abuse could have serious consequences for their health, academic performance, career prospects and the wider society.
He stressed that the Drug Integrity Test should not be viewed as a punitive exercise but as a preventive and protective measure designed to safeguard students’ wellbeing and contribute to a safe and healthy academic environment.
Yaqub also encouraged the students to become ambassadors of a drug-free lifestyle by influencing their peers and communities positively.
He commended the students and university management for their cooperation with the Agency, stressing that sustained collaboration between the NDLEA and educational institutions was essential to preventing drug abuse among young people.
The command said the Drug Integrity Test forms part of the NDLEA’s broader preventive initiatives, which include public awareness, early identification, intervention and encouraging responsible choices among young Nigerians.
The Bauchi State Command reaffirmed its commitment to working with educational institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen efforts against illicit drug use and contribute to building a healthier and drug-free generation.
