The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has dealt another major blow to an international drug trafficking network with the arrest of a businesswoman over the importation of synthetic cannabis from Canada.
In a statement by the Director,Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters Femi Babafemi , the agency intercepted 4.7 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, concealed in two consignments that arrived at the import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The shipments, hidden in cartons boldly labelled “Odugwu,” arrived separately on British Airways and Ethiopian Airlines flights from Canada.
NDLEA operatives initially arrested two cargo agents, Ali Rotimi Samson and Orimolade Oluwagbenga, before apprehending Edeh Onyeamachi Stanislus, who arrived at a logistics company to claim the consignments.
Investigations later led to the arrest of 44-year-old businesswoman Chioma Nneka Mokeme, identified as the alleged owner of the shipments. She was arrested on July 7 in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Area C Command in Surulere, Lagos.
According to the NDLEA, Chioma, who said she runs a printing business, confessed that a friend based in Canada, identified as Agbons Collins, introduced her to the illegal drug trade.
The latest seizure underscores the agency’s sustained crackdown on international drug trafficking networks using Nigeria as a transit and destination point.
