The push to turn Nigeria’s young graduates into job creators has received a major boost, as the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, unveils a new innovation hub in Abuja.
The facility, known as the NITDA Innovation Space, is designed to equip members of the National Youth Service Corps with digital skills and practical tools to build technology-driven solutions rather than depend solely on traditional employment.
At the commissioning, NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, said the initiative is a direct response to Nigeria’s growing youth population, with millions entering the labour market every year.
He noted that in today’s fast-changing global economy, success depends not just on certificates, but on relevant digital skills, innovation, and clear career planning.
According to him, the goal is simple: by the end of their service year, corps members should either have built viable businesses or developed solutions that position them for opportunities within the digital ecosystem.
Also speaking, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, described the initiative as a powerful model for youth empowerment and national development.
He said the programme proves that corps members are not just serving the nation, but can actively contribute to solving real-life challenges through innovation.
The event featured live demonstrations of digital solutions developed by corps members, including smart identity management systems and mobile applications aimed at improving efficiency within the NYSC scheme.
One of the innovators explained that their solution tackles long-standing challenges such as multiple ID cards, poor data management, and limited real-time updates offering instead a unified, secure digital identity platform.
NITDA says it has consistently trained hundreds of corps members annually, transforming the NYSC programme into a pipeline for innovation, where young Nigerians are encouraged to identify problems and build scalable, real-world solutions.
The new innovation space will further support this vision, helping ideas move from concept to deployment and in some cases, to full commercialisation.
The initiative also aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda on youth empowerment and digital transformation under President Bola Tinubu.
