The Federal Government says it is strengthening border security and the operational capacity of the nation’s security agencies to prevent instability in the Sahel from spilling into Nigeria.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), disclosed this during an engagement with Nigerians living in Angola, held on the sidelines of the twenty-first Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Luanda.
General Musa identified regional instability in the Sahel as one of the factors contributing to Nigeria’s security challenges, noting that threats from neighbouring countries can cross borders and undermine national security.
He said the government is therefore implementing comprehensive border management measures to curb such incursions, while also boosting the numerical strength and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
According to the Minister, targeted interventions are being implemented across the security sector, alongside efforts to integrate reliable data into national security strategies and development planning.
He said the measures are part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to restore lasting peace and stability and create a safer environment for Nigerians.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also highlighted improvements in data protection and identity management, saying stronger collaboration among security agencies is producing measurable results.
The engagement, which brought government officials together with members of the Nigerian community in Angola, provided an opportunity for the diaspora to raise concerns and receive responses on issues affecting them.
Meanwhile , the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, assured Nigerians abroad that the commission remains committed to their welfare and to creating opportunities for them to contribute to national development.
