The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft, arresting suspected pipeline vandals during a targeted operation in Bayelsa State.
Naval personnel from Forward Operating Base Formoso carried out the raid in Egbama-Angalabiri community, following credible intelligence on the activities of a notorious syndicate operating within the Clough Creek area.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Naval Information Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation led to the arrest of the alleged ringleader, identified as Godwin, also known as “Idiot,” who was reportedly apprehended at a night market while extorting traders. Further intelligence driven actions resulted in the arrest of another suspect, Happiness, believed to be a member of the same network.
During a search of the suspect’s residence, security operatives recovered communication devices and other tools linked to illegal operations. A pump-action gun was also seized in a follow-up operation.
Naval authorities say the mission faced resistance from armed gang members, but personnel responded swiftly, forcing the attackers to retreat and securing the area.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy equally reaffirmed its commitment to protecting critical oil infrastructure and combating economic sabotage across the Niger Delta.
