The Nigerian Navy has handed over a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State following his arrest during security operations in the Calabar waterways.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory stationed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
The Navy said the arrest was part of ongoing intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks and support structures linked to militancy and other unlawful activities in the area.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly maintained regular contact with members of militant groups operating around the Dayspring Island axis and was involved in activities that compromised security operations.
The Navy further alleged that intelligence gathered during the investigation linked the suspect to a wanted militant identified as Steven Joseph, also known as “Juju,” who has been associated with criminal activities within the waterways.
The Navy also claimed that the suspect acted as an intermediary in the disposal of goods allegedly stolen from market boats intercepted by militants.
Proceeds from the sale of the items were reportedly channelled back to the criminal network, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.Following preliminary investigations, the suspect was transferred to the DSS Calabar Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy said the development highlights ongoing efforts to target not only individuals directly involved in militant activities but also those suspected of providing support to criminal groups operating within the maritime environment.
It added that sustained intelligence-driven operations and collaboration among security agencies have contributed to efforts aimed at reducing criminal activities and enhancing security along the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
The Nigerian Navy however reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining intelligence-led operations, strengthening community engagement and carrying out targeted security measures to promote peace and stability within the region.
