The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says rehabilitation work has commenced on four vandalised towers along the Afam, IPP, Elelenwo 132 kilovolt double-circuit transmission line in Rivers State.
The affected towers, identified as T50, T51, T52 and T53, were discovered on August sixth by TCN linesmen.
Further inspection showed that critical bracing members had been removed, compromising the structural integrity of the four towers.
TCN says it has mobilised a contractor to carry out urgent repairs, with the Port Harcourt Transmission Region formally handing over the project on Tuesday, September 8.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engineer Azuh Lucky, who represented TCN Management, called for greater community involvement in protecting transmission infrastructure.
He urged residents of Elelenwo, traditional rulers and the Local Government Chairman to support efforts to prevent further vandalism.
TCN says vandalism of the towers poses a risk to reliable electricity transmission along the corridor and has pledged to ensure the rehabilitation works are completed on time.
The company also appealed to residents of Elelenwo and surrounding communities in Rivers State to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around transmission facilities.
