The Federal Government has added 544 megawatts of electricity wheeling capacity to the Kano power grid following the commissioning of four transmission substations aimed at improving electricity supply to industries, businesses and residential communities across the state.

The projects, executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in partnership with the Kano State Government, cover Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Minister of Power, Adeola Labzy, he said the new infrastructure will strengthen bulk electricity transmission, ease pressure on overloaded substations and create additional capacity to meet previously unmet electricity demand.

At Walalambe, a new 80-megawatt substation equipped with two 40-megavolt-ampere transformers is expected to improve power supply to key locations, including Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities.

The facility has six outgoing feeders to distribute electricity to the designated areas.

In a significant boost to industrial operations, Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, has been reconnected to the national grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid.

At Kumbotso, the project includes additional transmission capacity at the 330-kilovolt level, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each received an additional 100-megavolt-ampere transformer at the 132-kilovolt level.

The upgrade at Dan-Agundi is also expected to improve electricity supply following the restoration of substantial capacity at the substation, which had suffered fire damage. The facility serves Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The ministry says the projects will provide stronger electricity infrastructure to support manufacturing, small businesses and employment, while improving access to power for households across the state.

The investments are also expected to help Kano’s industrial and commercial sectors respond to growing electricity demand by strengthening the infrastructure required to transmit power to major economic centres.

The statement added that the projects align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the administration’s efforts to reposition the power sector as a foundation for national development.

It adds that investments in transmission infrastructure are critical to translating improvements in the electricity sector into economic opportunities for businesses and communities across Nigeria.
