Nigeria’s growing engagement with China is taking a new turn, as language becomes a strategic tool for diplomacy, media collaboration, and economic opportunity.
At the 2026 International Chinese Language Day celebration in Abuja, the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Yang Jianxing, highlighted the increasing importance of Mandarin in strengthening ties between both countries.
He described the language as a powerful connector, fostering mutual understanding and bridging cultural divides.
The event, which also marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, underscored how language exchange is shaping bilateral cooperation beyond traditional diplomacy.
Also speaking at the event , the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mohammed Bulama, noted that language plays a critical role in global communication, trade, and media exchange.
He pointed to the launch of Ni Hao China, a weekly programme developed in partnership with the Chinese Embassy, aimed at teaching Mandarin and promoting cultural awareness among Nigerians.
Bulama said the initiative is already opening new opportunities in storytelling, tourism, and business engagement between both nations.
Delivering her remarks, the FCT Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Grace Ike, emphasized the media’s role in shaping narratives that strengthen international partnerships. She said journalists remain key drivers in promoting cultural understanding and amplifying shared development goals.
Stakeholders at the event agreed that as global connections deepen, language learning is fast becoming a gateway to stronger economic ties, richer cultural exchange, and more effective communication between Nigeria and China.
The gathering brought together diplomats, media practitioners, and cultural stakeholders, all united by a shared goal using language as a bridge to deepen cooperation and build lasting international partnerships.
