The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu State, in another major operation against transnational drug trafficking in Nigeria.
The Agency arrested two alleged kingpins ; 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The suspects were allegedly working with Rodriguez Villanueva, a Mexican national and suspected member of a notorious drug cartel based in Mexico City.
The NDLEA in a statement by the Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters Femi Babafemi , said its Special Operations Unit tracked Brown’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states between December 1 and 4, 2025, eventually leading operatives to a compound in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu.
There, operatives uncovered a fully equipped clandestine laboratory capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities, with improvised reactors and distillation equipment.

The scale of chemicals recovered from the facility points to a sophisticated production operation.
They included 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
A related search at George’s family residence also uncovered eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine.
The two suspects have now been arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, financing and managing a drug trafficking organisation and unlawful possession of precursor chemicals.
They pleaded not guilty.
Consequently, the court has fixed October 21, 2026, for trial, following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing.
Three other suspects ; Uchenna, also known as Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Mexican national Rodriguez Villanueva are currently at large.
Why the bust matters
The Enugu operation highlights the growing focus of the NDLEA on the production side of the illicit drug trade, rather than only intercepting drugs after they have entered circulation.
The Agency has previously dismantled clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states, demonstrating the emergence of sophisticated local production networks with alleged international connections.
For Nigeria, disrupting such laboratories can help prevent the country from becoming a production or transit base for international drug networks, while limiting the availability of highly addictive synthetic drugs in local markets.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa Retired, said the dismantling of the cartel was further evidence that transnational drug networks would not be allowed to establish a foothold in Nigeria.
Marwa commended the officers involved and said the Agency would continue intelligence-driven operations and international cooperation to track down suspects still at large and bring them before the courts.
He also directed NDLEA personnel to sustain enforcement against illicit drug production and trafficking across the country.
