The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has held a regional seminar for judges of the Lagos State High Court to deepen their understanding of Nigeria’s evolving electricity sector and the legal framework guiding ongoing power sector reforms.

The seminar, held in Lagos, brought together judges and key stakeholders under the theme, “Nigeria’s Electricity Market in Transition: Law, Regulation and the Courts.”

Speaking at the event, NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, said the Commission has transferred electricity market oversight to sixteen states, marking a new phase of decentralised electricity regulation.

He explained that the seminar was designed to equip judges with a better understanding of the technical and regulatory issues shaping the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, enabling informed judicial decisions.

Representing the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Solicitor-General Hameed Oyenuga commended the initiative, describing it as an important platform for strengthening collaboration between the judiciary and stakeholders in the electricity sector.

He said a sound understanding of the industry would help ensure that court decisions support ongoing reforms.

Also speaking, the Administrative Judge of the Lagos Judicial Division, Justice Atinuke Ipaye, who represented the Chief Judge of Lagos State, urged participants to actively engage with experts and deepen their knowledge of the rapidly changing electricity landscape.

The seminar featured presentations on the legal and regulatory implications of Nigeria’s transition to a decentralised electricity market, as well as tariff regulation under the new framework.

NERC says the programme is the first in a series of regional engagements aimed at building judicial capacity and promoting a common understanding of the laws and regulations governing Nigeria’s electricity sector as it continues to evolve.
