The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to train its staff on promoting transparency and preventing corruption ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two-day Anti-Corruption Education and Sensitisation Workshop, themed “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters,” opened at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Representing the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu said the training comes at a critical time as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
She stressed that as Nigeria’s electoral umpire, INEC must lead by example in promoting integrity, noting that credible elections are the foundation of democracy and that any compromise in the electoral process weakens public trust.
Agbamuche-Mbu commended the ICPC for facilitating the workshop, saying it is designed to strengthen the capacity of electoral officials through practical knowledge, best practices and actionable strategies for conducting corruption-free elections.
Speaking on behalf of the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu, Director of Legal Services, Henry Emore, described corruption as one of the greatest obstacles to national development.
He noted that electoral malpractice often results in costly supplementary elections, increased litigation and greater pressure on law enforcement agencies.
Emore urged electoral officers to uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency, adding that the fight against corruption requires collective action.
The workshop is expected to equip INEC personnel with the knowledge and ethical standards needed to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
