The Nigerian Army has strengthened its operational readiness with the graduation of 27 newly trained drone pilots under the 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The ceremony, held at the Division Training School in Giginya Military Cantonment, marks a significant step in the Army’s push to integrate modern technology into its operations, particularly in tackling evolving security threats.
In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations
8 Division, Army / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba , delivering his remarks at the event, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, emphasized the growing importance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in military operations.
He noted that drones provide critical surveillance support, help conserve resources, and reduce risks to troops on the ground.
He stressed that modern warfare demands not just advanced equipment, but the effective integration of such tools into combat strategies, urging the newly certified pilots to apply their skills efficiently in the field.
Earlier, the Course Coordinator, Captain Samuel Yakubu, described the training as a forward-thinking initiative aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness.
He explained that the programme has equipped troops with real-time aerial surveillance capabilities, often described as giving soldiers “eyes in the sky.”
The trainees underwent intensive instruction, covering drone navigation using offline maps, aircraft assembly and handling, surveillance operations, and precision landing techniques.
The course ended with a practical demonstration where the pilots displayed tactical maneuvers, aerial surveillance skills, and coordinated landings.
Top-performing participants were recognised, with the presentation of drone pilot wings and cash awards for outstanding performance.
The initiative underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve security operations and protect lives across its areas of responsibility.
